From 2003-2007 he ran a successful Farmers' Market enterprise in London where he sold fruit products made from locally sourced seasonal fruits. In between travelling and writing, Ian is also a successful food consultant, working with manufacturers who supply Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer.

Ian's first book Thirty Miles: A Local Journey in Food was published in 2006.

His exploring credits include cycling through the Democratic Republic of Congo, travelling across Mongolia on horseback and venturing into the remote regions of Northern Vietnam. In addition he has travelled in Europe, Africa, Central Asia, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and the Caribbean.
